Yangshuo and the Li River

We got up very early this morning in time to catch an 8 o'clock minivan to a larger van to our boat heading along the Li River to Yangshuo. I recognised myself as the exact type of guest I used to hate when I asked if I could order something off the lunch menu instead of the breakfast menu at the hostel before we left. On the other hand, who puts pancakes on a lunch menu? I must have messed their process up quite a bit because they just managed to stick a huge pancake in a plastic bag to take away with me before we left, but it was very tasty -- though perhaps slightly undercooked.
The boat ride was very nice and the scenery was absolutely beautiful despite the fairly constant rain drizzling outside. The ride was about 4 hours long and included a fairly decent buffet lunch.
When we arrived in Yangshuo, our guide gave us directions to our hostel and we found it relatively easily. We had a quick snooze before heading back out into the streets. I'm not sure I have ever been to a more touristy city (perhaps Disney World) but we had a nice time wandering the street stalls before finding a hole in the wall dinner restaurant where we had noodles and a bamboo shoot and mushroom dish.
We're calling it an early night tonight but have a cooking class booked for tomorrow and rock climbing for my dad on Wednesday as long as the rain stops. They are unfortunately calling for it to continue for a week, but one can hope...

  1. I'm having trouble picturing this Disney Land - sort of like our shopping street in Beijing, only to the nth degree, I guess. Sure hope you guys are taking lots of pictures - of both places and food. And I really hope that the rain stops. Climbing there would be such an amazing experience for Ter, I'm sure. Or maybe it means he'll just have to go back some day - and take me!
